Realising Rights
The Safe and Legal (in Ireland) Abortion Rights Campaign uses a rights based approach in its work to realise abortion rights for Irish women.
Reproductive rights are recognised as human rights in international law. This means that, at an international level there are a number of legal and policy documents that impact on the recognition of and legal protection for reproductive and sexual rights.
In a landmark decision, on November 17th 2005, the United Nations Human Rights Committee, which monitors countries compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, decided its first abortion case, KL v. Peru. The decision establishes that denying access to legal abortion violates women’s most basic human rights.
Currently, a component of the Safe and Legal Campaign is the litigation strand of ABC v Ireland case currently to be heard at the European Court of Human Rights.
